Background

Sister Ignatius (aka Lelia Marie Morel de Guiramond) was born on June 20, 1898. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Bourg, France on July 13th, 1918 at 2116 Ursaline Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her Holy Habit and was renamed Sister Mary Ignatius on May 7, 1919.

Three Morel de Guiramond Sisters

In 1982, she responded to a request for family history information by Claudette Morel, the 23-year-old daughter of Sylvia David Morel. She included a handwritten letter and typed information with data from research she and her siblings had done. (See attached PDF file for orginal scan and transcribed letter)

Project Parameters and Goals

This faded, reproduced work as formed much of what many in the family know about the the Morel de Guiramond, D'Aquin and other family alliances.

Over the last few years, Kathy Shipley has been working to review the material from Sister Ignatus and re-locate source material to prove of improve this family history.

Working with Todd Boyum and other Wikitree Genealogist, the project will:

  1. Create profiles for the family provided by Sister Ignatus on WikiTree
  2. Source these profiles - Genealogy Defined
  3. Provide as much biographical and historical data as possible
  4. Add DNA Confirmation where possible
  5. Add family collecition images, and records as possible
  6. Create a place for Kathy, Todd and other genealogist and interested parties to collaborate.
  7. Create a repository for resources related to St Domingue, Jamaica, Cuba, St. Kitts and other Carribean / French Colonial Ancestry and there migration to and early life in Louisiana
  8. Document other mysteries to be solved
  9. Adding Morel de Guiramond family to the Morel de Guiramond One Name Study

This page will be a hub for the project and a source on each profile created from the project.Ond

January 2024 Goal

In January, we will instantiate the project, clarify goals and communication, and create any missing profiles. We'll attempt to do some sourcing for each as well. We will tie out any findings - corrections, etc. to the material from Sister Ignatius.

Morel de Guiramond One Name Study

As part of this effort, we are creating a One Name Study page for Morel de Guiramond:

Add [[Category:Morel de Guiramond Name Study]] to profiles with the name and include the {{One Name Study|name=Morel de Guiramond}} in the BIOGRAPHY section

The Letter

New Orleans, LA March 7, 1982

Dear Claudette,

The enclosed papers are what we got from St. Domingue and at Kingston, Jamaica. These are all I have because being a religious I don’t want to keep my family history and have no need of them so I gave all I had to my brothers and sisters. Besides I think this is all you need of your past history of the Morel de Guiramond family. Keep in mind that you are descended from Francois Marie Tranchant Comte’ de la Vergne.

We have been working many years on our Family Tree. Relatives from Ohio?, New Orleans, etc.? wrote to France, St. Domingue, Jamaica, etc.. We visited many places in and around New Orleans. We got a good many articles from New Orleans. Thank God it’s all over as it was hard work.

We know that Grand-pa Morel de Guiramond married twice, not three times. His first wife was Felicie Anais Cunningham. It was from the above grand-parents the me and my siblings originated. They had seven children.

His second wife was Marie Althee D’Aquin and it is from latter grandparents that you originated.

My parents and syblings(sp) were very close to Grand-pa Morel as my two oldest brothers stayed with him while they went to Soule’ College. Besides being a traveling salesman he came home often.

We were also very close to Uncle George as he too was a traveling salesman and came to New Roads often. Sometimes he would bring us little gifts. To my sister, Nita, he gave her a beautiful golden chain & cross. She wore it many years. In the forties (I think) he came to New Roads with a Grand-son. We were all so happy to see them. My brother Felix, my two sisters Nita and Rosella & I visited him at Lake Charles at least twice. That was really a happy reunion.

My sister, Nita, who will be 90 in July, remembers a lot about our Family of the past. She use to ask my father many questions about his mother, Felicie Anais Cunningham, who died at 38. Her baby, Marie, was only 20 days old; she caught a cold, pneumonia followed and this was the end. She is buried in her step-father’s General LaCoste’s tomb in St. Louis Cemetery on North Claiborne Ave., New Orleans. We visited the grave but it is very old and not well kept as her near relatives are all dead.

Grand-pa Morel married two years later to Marie Althee D’Aquin in 1871. They too had seven children.

About three years ago Emerson Morel, Edna D’Aquiin, Bertha & I went to Reserve to find out more about Grand-pa Morel. We were told that he was buried in Edgard, LA, but we could not find the tomb where he was buried, as the pastor of the Church was not at home. But we went to the home of Mr. Perret, that is the baby who sat on Grand-ma Althee’s lap when the picture was taken, that is the one you sent me. It was interesting to meet them and we talked much about our family.

My grand-father’s parents were Charles Aym’e (spelt also Aim’ee) Clairfayt Morel de Guiramond and Josephine DuPaty. (found on the second page I sent.)

God love you, I am, Loveingly,

Sr. Ignatius Morel
